Throwback Thursday: Bridge Street Half

The Bridge Street Half Marathon will always hold a special place in my heart.  It’s a small half in Huntsville, AL where I lived for 5 1/2 years, but it’s a great one.  Well organized and a very fast course, it’s one I’ve gone back to even since I moved to Orlando.

I first ran this race in 2014, the first year they held it.  It was a week after the Oak Barrel half (the hilliest half I’ve ever done) and I was doing very well until I ran into some dehydration issues.  I’ve learned I need a LOT of water during a run and the course has enough for many people but not enough for me.  I still finished fast enough for a PR at the time.  It was fun seeing a lot of my friends on the course and I finished with a smile on my face.

My 2nd time running it was 2015.  I was coming off of Dopey and a decent weight loss and I’d had some of my faster training times.  Shane had agreed to come pace me and carry water for me and I went in with the goal of breaking 2:25.  A few miles into the race I realized I was ahead of the 2:15 pacer but I figured eventually I’d slow down they’d pass me.  But they never did!  It’s still my PR and I finished at 2:14:19.  I’d broken my previous PR by 15 minutes!! Some day I want to beat that.

I also ran the race this year.  I haven’t been in the best shape for the past couple years and this year in particular has been a challenge health wise.  This year’s Bridge Street half was no different.  I was running very well the first 7.5 miles, on pace for a sub 2:40, one of my fastest halfs in the past 2 years.  Then just like most of my races this year, I got very sick.  I spent most of the rest of the race throwing up or trying to not throw up and finished at 2:56.  This was extremely disappointing and disheartening.  It’s been a rough year, and I’m hoping it turns around soon.  I still managed to finish with a smile and it was my 25th half marathon!
